Richard has had over thirty years in the legal profession in New Zealand and overseas. He has been a partner in Meares Williams for ten years. Before that, Richard was a partner in the Christchurch firm Anthony Harper for ten years.

Richard is skilled in private client work with specialisation in business and asset structuring, working with his clients to develop asset protection structures. He has experience in the rural sector with farm structuring and succession issues. He has worked with medical and other professionals to structure their practices.

His experience and expertise in trust and constitutional work and matters of governance has been valuable in advising many clients in the not-for-profit sector, including the Cancer Society and the Anglican Diocese of Christchurch.

Recent projects include:

• Establishment of a Limited Partnership for a large medical group
• Advising a substantial rural client on farm succession issues; resolving disputes over succession
• Re-drafting constitutions and restructuring a number of not-for-profit organisations and charitable trusts; advising on governance issues
• Restructuring of a financial advisory business
• Advising an architecture practice regarding its dissolution
